Products
....Click here to learn more about our furniture production process Reclaimed Teak Sourcing
Our ‘reclaimed
teak’ furniture is sourced from the purchase or barter of ‘Rumah Joglo’
which are traditional Indonesian houses or other ancient teak timbers.
These ancient and neglected houses have been standing between 50 to 200
years. The main frame construction and outer panels are made from teak and
this lumber is carefully recovered for the fabrication of our unique
furniture. Also, from time to time we are
privileged to recover and restore a number of ancient carved panels and
‘Gebyok’, large partly carved doors, from these houses. These are truly
unique and will be offered in our ‘One Offs & Ancients’ department
(coming soon).
Reclaimed Teak Preparation
The wood is
cleaned by hand with a wire brush to remove the outer weathered, oxidized
coating or old varnishes or paints, and nails or other hardware are
removed. Then it is planed square for production; larger holes left by
previous fittings, joints or hardware are filled with chunks of wood with
the same grain orientation. The larger components are all oven dried in
our solar powered kiln to reduce the moisture content to an ideal level
for a Northern European home. Knowing that we are using well seasoned wood
enables us to dry the wood rapidly without causing defects. The wood is
then re-planed and and squared so that it is ready to being crafted and
assembled into our new furniture. We overlook minor imperfections and
discolorations as they are perfectly normal and add to the charm of our
unique furniture and this has no effect on the stability of a finished
piece. Our reclaimed teak furniture has either a smooth or rustic look and
feel, you are able to state this if your are having your furniture made to
order.
Reclaimed Teak Construction Careful consideration is taken into the design and construction of our
furniture knowing that all natural hard and soft woods, including teak,
continue to absorb and exude moisture according to the humidity of its
immediate surroundings. Our furniture construction allows for this natural
and free wood movement which means that no matter where you are located,
our products are suitable and have been built to self adjust.
Reclaimed Teak Assembly At BespokeWardrobe, we are not strong believers in self assembly, but our dining and console tables, beds and
daybeds and some coffee tables do come with the legs separately to
minimize damage in transit, and for ease of handling. Each leg is
secured to an apron or base with one or two strong bolts, which are
always hidden from exterior view.
Reclaimed Teak Interior Finishing
The finishing process is one of the more important stages
of our production process and we aim to minimize the use of harmful
products. The furniture is first sanded by hand,
then
our dark antique coffee brown stain is applied. Once dry, two sealing coats
of shellac are applied with sanding between applications, finally a wax
formula (which is a composition of natural beeswax and hard carnauba
wax) is rubbed onto all surfaces then polished This combination of
events provides a beautiful yet durable finish to our furniture.
